Plant of the week – Voëlnesvaring (Bird’s nest fern, Asplenium nidus)

Spore is duidelik as rooi/bruin gedeeltes sigbaar.

How to propagate the Bird’s nest fern from spores:

The spores can be sown directly on the surface of a sterilized growth medium in a seed tray (use a tray with enough drainage holes). Make sure this operation is done outside any areas of breeze, otherwise the spores will be blown away. Put the seed tray inside a larger container partially filled with water – the idea is to keep the growth medium moist without watering from overhead. Keep the level of the water in the container below the surface of the growth medium. Cover the container with plastic or glass to keep the conditions humid and to prevent the surface from drying out. Place in a warm shaded spot with plenty of light. It will take several months for the new ferns to develop. The young ferns can be watered from underneath or sprayed lightly with a fine water sprayer. Transplant small plants in a moist potting mix.
